Class Series

What is the COVID policy?

To keep our event and community as safe as possible from COVID-19, and ensure a comfortable space for all students, we are currently requiring a properly worn face mask (over the nose and mouth) at all times while in classes. We no longer require proof of vaccination to be shown at the door and masks are recommended, though not required, during the dance. Please remember to bring:

  • Face Mask: a high-quality, well-fitting face mask (KN95 or N95 recommended)

See our COVID Policy page for more details.

Online registrations are closed. How can I sign up? What should I know?

You can still buy tickets at the door. You have two options:

1) Only during the first week of the month we allow drop-ins for $20
2) You can still register for the whole month of class at the door.

Please note that we do not encourage registration after the first week of class. We offer progressive curriculum and we strive for a balanced ratio follow/lead in class.

At the door, the pricing is: for 4 weeks of class it's $75 and for 5 weeks of class it's $90. This price includes DJ'ed night admission and one live band night on the last week of the month.

What should I expect?

Partnered swing dancing is a role-based dance. Students may choose whichever role they prefer, either "Lead" or "Follow". We ask that students stick with their chosen role for the duration of the series in order to ensure a balanced ratio in our classes. Please note that no partner is required to register for a class.

Do I need to bring a partner?

No, not at all! We rotate partners frequently so students will have the opportunity to meet different people and experience a variety of styles.

What level am I?

We offer a progressive series for both Level 1 and Level 2. All level 2 students should have a basic understanding of 6-count East Coast Swing, 8-count Lindy Hop, and Charleston.

Students may self-assess their own level and enroll in the series they feel is appropriate. However, we ultimately rely on our teachers' criterion to assess a student's level in order to provide consistency in the learning environment and to ensure that all our students have the best experience at The Breakaway.

Do you teach classes every week?

Yes! Some exceptional exceptions exist for major holidays. To make sure you always have the latest information on classes and events, please subscribe to our newsletter, follow us on facebook, or check out our calendar.

Can I join the social dance after class?

Yes! Your class series package includes admission to all our social dances and live band nights for that month.

When can I register for classes?

We open registration for our classes in the middle of each month! You may register online or at the venue. Sign up early for special early bird pricing!

Can I register for classes after the first week?

We recommend people to sign up from the beginning of the month since we have created a progressive curriculum and we strive for a balanced ratio between follows and leads in our classes.

Taster Classes

What do you teach?

We alternate teaching 6-count (East Coast Swing) and 8-count (Lindy Hop), depending on the crowd. You will learn some basic footwork and new movements to build on what you already know. We have designed this class for first-time dancers, but we always teach something new so you can create your own variations.

When is the taster class?

Every week from 7:30 pm to 8:15 pm

Do I need to bring a partner?

No, not at all! We will rotate every now and then so everybody gets to dance together and feel how the connection can differ from person to person. Simply bring your smile and comfortable shoes are recommended.

Can I take this class again?

Of course! We have designed this short class so people can take it several weeks in a row while always learning a little something that will improve their dancing.
