Swingin’ at the Savoy is an annual event held at Oakland’s historic Lake Merritt Dance Center that celebrates the history of lindy hop and swing jazz, styles of dance and music that originated in and were popularized by African-American communities in the 1930s and 1940s. We would like to invite our local community to join us in this unique opportunity to take dance classes from internationally-renowned instructors, listen to live music performed by some of the most talented musicians alive today, and meet some of the people who helped keep the dance alive through the years--including Barbara Billups, Sugar Sullivan, and Chester Whitmore.

We are offering multiple full scholarships for dancers of all experience levels (including no experience) and dance passes for Swingin’ at the Savoy 2020, which takes place from February 28 to March 1st, for those who would otherwise be unable to attend due to the cost of admission. We especially encourage applications from East Bay residents, newcomers to swing dancing, and people of color, but the application is also open to all interested members of our community. The only requirement for the Newcomer’s Track workshop is that you have never attended a multi-day swing dance workshop before.
